Material Matters by Rita Dungey
at the Hallberg Center for the Arts
This beautiful art exhibit is sponsored by: Greg Lecker
This solo exhibit was rescheduled do to COVID-19 and will now open on May 21, 2020 and be on display through June 13, 2020 at the Hallberg Center for the Arts in Wyoming, MN. Rita has exhibited her artwork at galleries throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa and as far away as Japan.
The stuff and materials of everyday life provide inspiration for this body of work.
This exhibit draws on my belief that all material objects constantly undergo change on a journey through history. Instead of viewing something as old or useless based on the passage of time, can we entertain a series of new beginnings; where what was once “old” can begin again as “new”?
In this series I challenge traditional presentation of two-dimensional painting and experiment with the raw energy of used materials - frayed, worn, and uneven canvas remnants, deconstructed books, found papers and scrap lumber. Bold, playful, and spontaneous, they celebrate history, transitions, and new beginnings. New life is breathed in to untamed substrates while allowing them to retain some of the character of their previous life.
