The Imaginative Sculptures of

Gary Carlson

My assemblage sculptures begin with discarded and broken pieces of defunct technologies.  My challenge is to unify these disparate parts and make them play well together aesthetically.  I like to work mostly in a non-objective manor; not representing a person or thing.

I’ve always liked the energy of positive and negative spaces in Franz Kline’s paintings and I try to capture a similar asymmetrical energy in my sculpture. I focus on compositional elements like color, texture, shape and line. I concentrate on how these elements can be repeated and varied to construct patterns and build rhythms that move the viewers eye throughout the entire design. As a work develops the collective parts create a story. It can turn out to be a humorous observation, social statement, pure design or a metaphor. Sometimes I start with questions we deal with in our lives like politics or beliefs.

It’s an enjoyable intuitive process and I never know exactly where it will take the viewer or me. Similar to life, we never know what is around the next corner or where it will lead us. My goal is to awaken the viewer to the extraordinary beauty of the ordinary objects that surround us, and their potential to communicate something beyond their former utility.
